The holiday season is upon us once again. Christmas and holiday-themed events are making their annual appearances in our beloved city of Vancouver. Here are 10 fun-filled events to check off your holiday outing list.

  1. Aurora Winter Festival

Immerse yourself in a hidden village by the North Pole filled with captivating displays of lights and magical characters. Enjoy market huts, food gardens, amusement park rides, live entertainment, and plenty of joyful activities. Visit Santa’s Workshop, lace up your skates, and channel your inner Tessa Virtue on the Frozen River. There is something for everyone at the Aurora Winter Festival.

Where: Vancouver’s Concord Pacific Place, 811 Carrall Street

When: Now to Sunday, December 30, 2018, from 4-10pm. Closed on select days.

Cost: Tickets can be purchased online. Prices range from $14.99 (Child and Senior Admission) to $19.99 (General Admission) and $59.99 (Family Admission – up to 5 members). Infants under the age of three get in for free.


  1. English Bay Beach Cleanup & Christmas Social

Join Surfrider for their last annual Beach Cleanup of 2018. Put on your best ugly Christmas sweater (there will be a prize awarded for the ugliest one), invite a friend or two (the more the merrier), and help preserve and protect English Bay. Reusable gloves, buckets, and tongs will be provided on site. Participants are invited to bring their own cleaning supplies as there’s a limited amount. Be sure to wear closed toe shoes and bring a reusable mug to keep your hot cocoa warm!

Where: Seawall, just north of Cactus Club Cafe

When: Saturday, December 15th from 11 am to 1 pm

Cost: Registration is done online and the event is free of charge.

  1. Yule Duel Vancouver 2018 Carolling Competition 

Hundreds of angelic voices from Vancouver’s best choirs will once again echo through the streets of Gastown during Yule Duel, BC’s largest outdoor carolling competition. Immerse yourself in holiday cheer by cheering on your favourite carolling troupe as they sing their way to the top!

Where: Water Street between Carrall and Cambie

When: Thursday, December 6, 2018, from 6 to 9 pm

Cost: Admission to the event is free, but a $5 donation to May’s Place is suggested 


  1. Improv Against Humanity: HO HO HOrrible Holiday Special

The Fictionals and special guests Those Guys are celebrating the Christmas season with a HO HO HOliday Special. Enter for your chance to win awesome Christmas gifts, enjoy hilarious comedy performances, and help crown the new Most Horrible Person in Vancouver.

Where: Rio Theatre 1660 E Broadway, Vancouver

When: Wednesday, December 19th, 2018

  1. Vancouver Christmas Market

The 9th annual German-inspired Vancouver Christmas Market creates the perfect atmosphere to get into the holiday spirit. Experience a selection of traditional German food and beverages. Browse through various vendors offering authentic wood carvings and toys, knitted goods, nutcrackers, pottery, and other unique gifts for your friends and family. There will also be fun activities for kids, live entertainment, and the opportunity to ride downtown Vancouver’s Christmas Carousel.

Where: Jack Poole Plaza, 1055 Canada Place

When: Open daily from 11 am to 9 pm from now to Christmas Eve. It will close early at 6 pm on December 24th.

  1. Festival of Lights at VanDusen Garden

The botanical garden will be transformed into a Winter Wonderland for the holidays. Covered in more than a million lights, reindeer and Scandinavian gnomes also roam the garden trails. Visitors can stroll through the Gingerbread Wood, Lantern Alley, and the Make-a-Wish Candle Grotto.

Where: VanDusen Botanical Garden, 5251 Oak Street, Vancouver

When: December 1, 2018, to January 7, 2019 from 4:30 pm to 9 pm. Hours will be extended to 10 pm between December 15 and 24.

The world’s greatest circus performers Cirque Musica presents Holiday Wonderland, an all-new concert experience featuring the cast of Cirque Musica. Featuring favourite holiday songs performed by a live symphony orchestra.

  1. A Charlie Brown Holiday Double Bill

Good Grief, it’s Charlie Brown times two! The beloved holiday special A Charlie Brown Christmas is back and playing in a special double feature with You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown. These cherished holiday stories will be brought to the stage for children and grown-ups by Andrew Cownden, Rebecca Talbot, Emilie Leclerc, and Amanda Testini. A live jazz trio will also be featured in these musical adaptations of a classic Peanuts holiday special.

  1. Arts Club Theatre Company presents: Miss Bennet: Christmas At Pemberley

A holiday confection filled with the classic Jane Austen charm, Miss Bennet is a modern sequel about the bookish middle child of the Bennets. The Vancouver Aquarium is decorated to the nines for the holiday season with a new interactive experience. Get playful surrounded by virtual floating bubbles, glimmering lights, and the soft, soothing sounds of the deep blue sea in the Underwater Dolphin Gallery. Watch special guest, Scuba Claus, don his flippers and dive with colourful cold-water creatures.
