Police are investigating the city’s first homicide of the year after a man was killed Tuesday evening.

A little after 8 PM on Jan 1, officers were called to an assault in an apartment located in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.  There, they discovered 39-year-old Matthew Dillen Johnson “in medical distress.” Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Investigators are continuing to collect evidence to determine what led to the man’s death and who is responsible,” said Const. Jason Doucette in a media release. “Based on the initial investigation, detectives do not believe the public is at risk.”

No arrests have been made.
